SV Orion is a 2006 Lagoon 440 Owners Model. We’re the 7th owners, and looking to make her our home for a long time.
We named the boat SV Orion after our friend, Ryan Lynch. Ryan was a big part of our lives. Shortly after I (Jason) got out of the military following Desert Storm and the LA Riots, I was a bit lost, and didn’t know what to do with myself. Ryan helped share his dream of sailing, and that led to Janeane and I finding our path to where we are today.
Ryan passed away after a long battle with lung cancer in February 2024. He never smoked, was physically fit, and we always thought he’d be here to join us on this journey. His gaming handle back in the day was Orion’s Blade, and we wanted a way to bring him along on our journey. The last years of Ryan’s life really made us realize what is important to us, and is one of the reasons we’ve worked so hard the last 2 years to do this.
Choosing a boat is one of those crazy experiences. You start out with so many different ideas, big dreams, a fast boat that also is comfortable and affordable (unicorn), and then you start the process of choosing a boat. We needed something safe, comfortable, stable, and something that would help us make our journey possible.
We started out thinking we wanted an Outremer or something fast, but then as we got on those boats, we found that the living space wasn’t enough, at least for our price range to do this sooner than later. The fly bridge boats were at the bottom of our list, as we felt the raised boom would take too much away from the sailing experience. That is until we got on our friend’s Chris and Heidi’s Lagoon 440, and sat in the fly bridge for the first time. It felt like home, and we’ve been very happy with our choice.
We are a family of 3 introverts and 2 extroverts, and the layout with a space up front, the fly bridge, the rear salon, and inside area is the perfect way for the 2 extroverts to survive the introverts wrath, when they can’t get away to recharge. It really was the right choice for us, and if you’ve seen Brent and Ana’s Lagoon 440, Impi, you know they can sail and are safe boats.
